Candice McDonald Kotyk and Mandy Garcia, Salmon Berry Travel & Tours co-owners, offer a glimpse of what makes their Alaska-based company—and tours—special. The unique aspect of Salmon Berry Tours has grown steadily since May 2005, when the business was established.
"At present, this uniqueness is steeped in our reputation for providing boutique-style, one-of-a-kind,
quality day tours and multiday packages," Candice said. "Guests learn and 'feel' quickly the high energy, fun and enthusiastic attitude, as well as the personalized service, which consistently exudes from the Salmon Berry team of experts."
From an early age, Candice realized she would become an entrepreneur in Alaska. Her father had his own business, which was a big influence. Following college, travel and a couple of tourism-related jobs, she knew she wanted to work in the travel/hospitality industry. Salmon Berry Tours began with a singular walking tour around downtown Anchorage. In year four, Mandy came to work at Salmon Berry and recently became Candice's official partner and co-owner.
In addition to many distinctively Alaskan day tours, Salmon Berry Tours offers a variety of winter Northern Lights and Iditarod packages. A significant portion of the company's business has grown into developing custom travel itineraries and packages, for independent travelers and for large groups from around the globe. These packages are crafted to encompass cities, attractions, events and transportation throughout Alaska.
What makes the Salmon Berry team special? "Fun is the word at Salmon Berry! Employees have often listed Salmon Berry as the best place they have ever worked." The Salmon Berry team takes great pride in their company, their customer service, their professionalism and the Alaska dreams they fulfill for their guests each day.
"Salmon Berry guests leave as friends, and many have even moved to Alaska over the years, having been inspired by our fun-loving team of people."
Perhaps that's a reflection of what Candice feels everyone should know about Salmon Berry and the territory it holds dear: "We deliver!"
The business now owns seven luxury 15-passenger Sprinter vans, driving visitors on a multitude of summer and winter adventures throughout Southcentral and Interior Alaska. Every Salmon Berry tour is operated by one of the company's fully certified, trained and knowledgeable local Alaskan guides.
"We are based in Alaska and we operate year-round, making us unique in the Alaskan tourism industry."
That means opportunities for visitors to thoroughly enjoy The Great Land, beyond the milder seasons. Winter in Alaska, Candice notes, is the Salmon Berry specialty.
"Salmon Berry is the only Anchorage-based tour operator marketing, selling and delivering winter tour products on a regular basis—dog sledding, ice fishing, snow machining, to name a few! It's a special and season-exclusive niche we have carved out, which continues to grow and contributes to our success."
